Council Conclusions on Promoting the common values of the EU through sport.
Summary Full text Source
The Conclusions recognise that the EU’s foundational values—human dignity, freedom, equality, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights—are shared across Member States and that sport offers a universal platform to promote them. They emphasise that participation in sport, sport education and organised sport activities can help reinforce social inclusion, intercultural dialogue, respect, tolerance, non-discrimination and solidarity.
Member States are invited to support initiatives that build sport’s potential to strengthen civic competences and a sense of European belonging, including via grassroots sport, major events and informal learning.
The document encourages promoting these values via sport organisations, educational institutions, local authorities and major sport events and also asks the Commission to integrate sport into external actions, research, funding programmes and partnerships with third countries.
